High-Low Dress Length Guide: Front and Back Measurements
Delen
A high-low dress has an asymmetrical hem that is shorter in front and longer at the back. It combines the drama and movement of a long gown with easier forward movement and a clear view of the shoes.

What is a high-low dress?
The front can finish anywhere from mini to tea length, while the back may fall around the ankle, reach the floor or extend into a train. Because many combinations are possible, “high-low” describes the shape of the hem rather than one fixed dress length.
A typical front may measure about 15–33 in (38–84 cm) from waist to hem. A long back may measure about 34–46+ in (86–117+ cm) from waist to hem. These are broad references; the intended design and the wearer’s proportions determine the correct measurements.
Is dress length the difference between the front and back?
No. The front and back are two separate finished lengths. Measure each vertically from the same starting point—usually the natural waist—to its intended hem.
The back waist-to-hem length minus the front waist-to-hem length is the high-low drop. The drop describes the difference between the hems, but it does not replace the two finished measurements.
How to measure a high-low dress
- Stand naturally on a level floor in the shoes you plan to wear.
- Measure vertically from the natural waist to the desired front hem.
- Measure from the natural waist to the desired back hem.
- Record the two measurements separately as front waist to hem and back waist to hem.
- If the back approaches the floor, also provide waist to floor, hollow to floor, total height and heel height.
Keep the tape vertical. Do not follow the curve of a full skirt because that can add unnecessary length.
Choosing the front and back combination
| Front hem | Back hem | Overall effect |
|---|---|---|
| Mini | Tea or ankle | Playful and easy to dance in |
| Above the knee | Ankle | Balanced and suitable for many semi-formal events |
| Knee or tea | Floor | Elegant with strong movement and visible shoes |
| Tea | Floor with a train | Dramatic bridal or formal statement |
When does high-low work well?
High-low dresses are popular for prom, receptions, destination weddings, garden events and formal occasions where the wearer wants a statement silhouette. The shorter front can make walking easier, but a floor-length back still needs enough clearance for the venue and shoes.
