Tea, Midi, Ankle and Maxi Dress Lengths Explained

Tea, midi, ankle, maxi and floor length often overlap in product descriptions. The clearest distinction is where the finished hem sits on the wearer. These approximate ranges provide a useful starting point, but a custom waist-to-hem measurement gives the most predictable result.

Tea length usually identifies a lower-mid-calf position, while midi covers a wider range.

Tea length

Approximate range: 28–33 in (71–84 cm) from waist to hem, or 44–48 in (112–122 cm) from hollow to hem.

Tea length generally finishes around the lower mid-calf. It is strongly associated with romantic and vintage-inspired silhouettes, especially a fitted bodice with a full skirt. The hem stays clear of the floor, making it practical for garden weddings, civil ceremonies, bridal showers, rehearsal dinners and dancing.

Midi length

Approximate range: 29–36 in (74–91 cm) from waist to hem, or 45–51 in (114–130 cm) from hollow to hem.

Midi is a broad category covering dresses between the knee and ankle. In current retail language, it often means below mid-calf but above the ankle. A fitted midi can feel streamlined and modern, while chiffon, tulle or a floral full skirt creates a softer effect.

Tea length vs midi length

The terms overlap, and retailers do not always use them consistently. Tea length usually refers to a more specific lower-mid-calf position. Midi can include a wider span from below the knee toward the ankle. If the placement matters, use an exact waist-to-hem measurement instead of relying only on the product name.

Ankle length

Approximate range: 34–39 in (86–99 cm) from waist to hem, or 50–54 in (127–137 cm) from hollow to hem.

An ankle-length dress finishes at or slightly above the ankle bone. It offers the elegance of a long dress without touching the floor. This makes it useful for outdoor venues, destination weddings, travel and dancing. It also keeps statement shoes visible.

Maxi length

Approximate range: 37–45 in (94–114 cm) from waist to hem, or 53–60 in (135–152 cm) from hollow to hem.

Maxi is a broad fashion category for a long dress falling from the lower ankle to the floor. A maxi may be ankle-skimming, full length or floor length. The word describes the general length rather than the formality: maxi dresses range from relaxed holiday styles to bridesmaid and evening gowns.

Maxi length vs floor length

Maxi and floor length are related but not exact synonyms. A floor-length hem reaches or lightly skims the floor while the wearer stands in the intended shoes. A dress that stops at the lower ankle may still be sold as a maxi, but it is not floor length.

Length Typical position Useful for
Tea Lower mid-calf Garden weddings, civil ceremonies and vintage looks
Midi Between knee and ankle Cocktail parties, dinners and semi-formal events
Ankle At or above the ankle bone Outdoor venues, travel and visible shoes
Maxi Lower ankle to floor Holidays, bridesmaid looks and evening occasions
Floor At or lightly skimming the floor Weddings, prom, galas and black-tie events

For a gown that reaches the floor, heel height affects the finished length. Read how to measure dress length before ordering, or explore floor-length gowns and wedding dress trains.
