This quick guide compares the most common lengths and helps you choose by occasion. Use the linked guides when you need more detail.

Choose by occasion

  • Homecoming or a night out: mini or above the knee keeps the look playful and makes dancing easier.
  • Cocktail party: above the knee, knee or midi length can feel polished without appearing overly formal.
  • Garden or beach event: tea, midi, ankle or high-low hems stay clearer of grass, sand and uneven surfaces.
  • Wedding guest: knee, below-the-knee, tea, midi or ankle length works for many dress codes.
  • Prom or gala: maxi, floor length or high-low creates a stronger evening look.
  • Wedding dress: tea, ankle or floor length can work; a train adds formality to a floor-length gown.

The measurement is more reliable than the name

“Midi,” “maxi” and even “tea length” can describe slightly different positions from one retailer to another. For custom sizing, decide where you want the hem to finish and provide the requested vertical measurement. Short dresses usually use waist to hem. Long dresses commonly require waist to floor, hollow to floor, total height and heel height.
